During the reign of Maria Theresa, Bratislava—then known as Pressburg—experienced its greatest prosperity and a veritable golden age. It was in this very city, in St. Martin’s Cathedral, that this famous monarch was ceremoniously crowned Queen of Hungary in 1741. Bratislava Castle was transformed from a cold military fortress into a luxurious Baroque royal residence where grand celebrations were held. The old city walls were gradually demolished to allow the city to expand freely, enabling the nobility to build their opulent palaces here. The streets were bustling with artisans, commerce, and culture, making the then-Prešporok one of the most significant and modern centers of the entire Habsburg Monarchy.
